Making Learning English Fun For A Non-English Speaker

Posted by Adriana Noton on March 11th, 2010 and filed under online education | No Comments »

There are lots of things to do in making learning English fun for a non-English speaker. Teachers often find new ways to help their classes be more interesting, and sometimes they do what their students want to do. Moreover, there are some things aside from traditional books that you can remember to be able to learn English in a more interesting and fun way.

One of the first things that you can do is not to mind the grammar. A good way to study a new language is to know that words are the most important; grammar only comes in second. You can always communicate with the right words – even with bad grammar and construction. But if you have the perfect grammar but you don’t know the words, you’d be left misunderstood.

Helping these English learners to speak more often is one of the best ways for them to retain the language. Keep in mind that it is always better to think in that particular language, as well as actually speak it. There are lots of learners who cannot grasp English because they do not want to speak. Encouraging them to speak, even if they make mistakes, would help them to learn to talk in English.

All English learners probably love music, so it isn’t quite a surprise that a number of learners utilize music to in making learning English fun for a non-English speaker. Teachers also use music since it somewhat promotes a lighter mood in the classroom. English lyrics can be great sources of speaking and listening activities, as well as comprehension activities to help learners grasp the language.

These lyrics also provide a great way to remember vocabulary. Learners tend to connect words to certain tunes and melodies which simply make them easier to remember when they speak. Learners may also like to sing along with music, as well as do some listening exercises and speaking exercises as to what they think of the music.

Some learners tend to retain language better when paired with visuals and audio. Different educational videos, and even your normal sitcoms in English can be a great way. Some learners also watch movies or shows in their native language, but set the subtitles in English. It makes them translate what they hear and see the words, enabling the to recall to spell the words easier than simply remembering through hearing.

Games can also add jazz to English learning. Different games like charades or pass the message can help learners build vocabulary and practice sentence construction. Others also use different board games to encourage them to speak, and therefore to recall and practice what they have learned. Keeping a dictionary handy also allows learners to learn new words on their own.

Learning English doesn’t have to be strapped to the books and lesson plans. With a mixture of conversations, games, film and music, making learning English fun for a non-English speaker is as easy as 1-2-3.

The Cellular Phones And Our Children Question

Posted by Kenny Lindos on March 10th, 2010 and filed under online education | No Comments »

Not so many years ago, cell phones where, quite frankly, the size of half a house brick and were mainly used for business due to their bulkiness. Today’s models are very slim and sophisticated and its hard to find someone who doesn’t own one. They have become so popular that landlines are being removed from homes as the cells are now working out cheaper.

Cell phones are very convenient, especially for working parents. It doesn’t seem right however, to see preteens with them permanently attached to their ear.

This begs an obvious question. How young is too young for a cell phone and when should children get their first?

I personally think that no child should have a cell before they are a teenager, 14 being the earliest age. They will have a wider circle of friends by this age and be able to do a lot more unsupervised.

Even at this age, you should impress on your child that this is a phone for emergencies, to contact you if they need you.

As cells should be for emergencies only, why would a child of 12 need one? If they go somewhere for the evening they should be getting dropped off and then picked up again so they shouldn’t need to ring you for anything. They aren’t old enough to appreciate that this is a serious piece of technology and they tend to treat them as toys.

You must have heard the horror stories about the parents getting their cell phone bills and their kids have ran up hundreds of dollars worth of calls. This is where I would advise you getting them a pay as you go phone.

Knowing that they will have to pay themselves to top up their phones will give them an increased sense of responsibility and they won’t then spend hours on it talking to someone they last saw 10 minutes ago!

2nd Place Idol Singers Who Still Enjoy Success

Posted by Warren Peate on March 3rd, 2010 and filed under Uncategorized | No Comments »

Instant riches and stardom await the winner of talent show American Idol. The recording contract is a prize that makes dreams come true.

While some winners have, quite frankly, disappeared without trace, the likes of Jordin Sparks and Kelly Clarkson have proved they have the talent to stay in the game. They have a lot to thank American Idol for.

This must be one of the only contests in the world where coming second doesn’t make you a loser. A great many singers who have finished runner up have gone on to enjoy commercial success, sometimes even overtaking the ones who beat them on the night.

Here are a few names that you will know doubt recognize, even if you can’t remember the ones who actually beat them on American Idol. These guys have great careers thanks to finishing second.

As far back as the second season, runners up made their mark. Clay Aiken shuffled onto stage looking like a rabbit caught in headlamps, he looked so out of place we felt sorry for him. Then he began to sing, and we were absolutely blown away.

Ruben Studdard was the winner of that show, and I bet he wishes he had achieved half of the success that Clay has enjoyed since. His fans from the show have stayed loyal and have swelled in numbers since. Now a major Broadway star as well as appearing on many top rated TV shows, Clay Aiken is going to be around a long, long time.

Who can forget the guy with the baby face and the big big voice named David Archuleta? Coming second did him no harm whatsoever, and this guys star is still rising. He’s working hard and reaping his rewards. David is a true star who is going to be with us an awful long time.

It looks as if this year’s second placed contestant Adam Lambert is taking his place on this list too. He was beaten on the night by Kris Allen but in the months since that night, Lambert’s career is going from strength to strength while Allen’s seems to have stalled.

This writer additionally frequently shares knowledge on subject such as bathroom vanity cabinets and powder room vanities.

Think About Buying These Three Great Indie Music Releases

Posted by Mark Hall on February 18th, 2010 and filed under online education | No Comments »

There’s been a lot going on in the indie music world since the beginning of the year, and music fans are the beneficiaries here. Some highly anticipated releases have been as good as many have hoped for, which is a rare thing when it comes to music and movies.

Here are three of my personal favorites through the beginning of the year. If you haven’t heard any of these yet, I would definitely recommend adding them to your collection.

You’ve likely heard some of the many successful songs from Vampire Weekend’s debut album, and you’ll likely hear some of the future hits from Contra, their second release. Expectations have been riding high for this young band, and rightly so. Their debut was an instant classic.

While many bands fail to match the level achieved with their initial success, Vampire Weekend has found a way to produce an album that sounds different than its first one, yet exceptional nonetheless. The band should be praised for its ability to produce a follow up without letting people down, given the massive success of its debut.

Another great album in 2010 is Teen Dream, by Beach House. The group from Baltimore has come through with a new album that builds on the unique sounds established by the group in their past releases.

The sounds of this CD will bring you into a trance, as the instrumentation, vocals, and lyrics all blend seamlessly, creating a sound that’s familiar and unique all in its own.

Lastly, Owen Pallett has come out with a new album known as Heartland. Critics are loving this CD, as the sounds are intricately layered and truly unique.

Pallett, who used to go by Final Fantasy, has hit a home run with this release and this accomplished songwriter continues to improve with each new release. Listen to this if you have an adventurous taste for new music.

Besides albums, the writer also regularly contributes articles on wooden kitchen stools and stools with wheels.

How To Pay For College In An Online School

Posted by Gavin Shields on February 8th, 2010 and filed under online education | No Comments »

Studies show that college graduates earn more and have more career opportunities than those who do not have a college diploma. Paying for a college education, whether you are attending a traditional or online school may be a challenge, but not impossible. Fortunately, there are several options available that can help you meet tuition fee expenses.

online schools allow students to make payments on an installment basis. This is especially welcome for students who are adults dealing with other expenses such as household bills, mortgage, medical bills and child-related expenses. On the other hand, schools also encourage one-time or full tuition payments by giving discounts of up to 50 percent.

Others offer a payment plan that allows you to pay for one course at a time, rather than an entire semester or year at once. Here, you are required to pay the tuition and applicable fees before each course’s start date. To further reduce costs, you could try to get credit for college-level courses you may have taken in another institution, while attending an online high school, or for relevant work experience.

Authorization to bill a third party. Some employers are willing to subsidize their employees’ tuition fees. The same is true for the military/government agencies and their staff. online schools require third parties to shoulder at least 50 percent of the tuition for this option to be applicable.

The student and the employer or military/government agency must agree to certain terms and conditions such as submitting required documentation and payment on time. This includes any amount not covered by the third party, which the student must pay for. Also, this option is valid only while the student is an employee of the third party.

Your employer may prefer not to be billed directly and will instead reimburse you the tuition costs. The online school usually offers a deferment period so that you will have time to collect reimbursement from your employer. Payment should be made before the deferment period lapses, otherwise a late fee will be charged.

Other traditional sources of financial aid include scholarships and loans. You can use private loans or Federal Financial Aid grant and loan programs. If you are a member of active duty, reserve or National Guard military personnel or your spouse is one, you are eligible for discount in tuition at most online schools.

The above are just some common ways to get funding for college in an online school. An enrollment adviser is the best person to help students decide on which payment option is suitable for them. The cost should not be a deterrent to pursuing a worthwhile investment such as a college education.

Gavin recognizes the many advantages of online high school and gives information so that others can learn about them. Education is an important, fundamental facet of kid’s lives and online school is tailored in order to help students get their diploma.

    Deciding On An Online School

Posted by Jim Sorenson on January 13th, 2010 and filed under online education | No Comments »

The considerations for choosing an online school are the same, whether it’s for acquiring a high school diploma or a college degree. The only difference is that there are four types of virtual high schools to choose from — private, public, chartered and university sponsored – and it is possible that geography will be a factor (e.g. charter schools are available only to students living in a certain area). Being familiar with these types can help parents and students in their decision.

That aside, the first thing to assess is whether the school offers or specializes in the program that the student wants to pursue. For instance, it might be better to get a nursing degree from a school that specializes in medical fields. Also consider that some schools offer only certificates, not diplomas.

Is the school properly accredited? This ensures that you will not be wasting money, time and resources on a diploma that you can’t use later to pursue a higher education or advance your career. The accreditation should be by recognized by creditors and include oversight as well as a license to operate.

Cost: Similar to traditional learning institutions, the cost for attending an online school can vary, from the very expensive to the practically free charter schools. Aside from tuition, some charge additional fees on training materials, graduation and the like. Learn what your payment options are, and it doesn’t hurt to ask about discounts and scholarships, either.

Studying the curriculum and learning about the school’s credit transfer policies can reduce costs and the time it takes to earn a diploma. Some schools allow students to skip courses already taken in another institution. Others offer credit for real-life work experience.

Knowing how classes are conducted will also help in decision-making, since the process should fit the student’s learning style and schedule. Things like teacher-to-student ratio, learning format and support for struggling students should be considered. It also pays to ask about the qualifications of online teaching staff, as well as opportunities to attend a demo class.

Does the school have a good track record? Generally, the longer the school has been around, the better. Other things that are good to know: number of students currently enrolled, number of graduates, number of graduates who went on to college (for virtual high schools) and drop-out rate.

Reputation: Feedback from people who have actual experience with the school is also important input. This includes people you know, students and faculty (past or present) and information gathered from online discussion boards and blogs. Taking the time to consider these will help you decide on an online school.

Jim has looked at the choices that students have to participate in online high school and helps parents to find information. It is important that kids obtain a proper education whether in public schools or participating in online school.

Protection Against Identity Theft: The Threats

Posted by Henry Kurtz on December 23rd, 2009 and filed under online education | No Comments »

Over the years, protection against identity theft has changed with the times since the moment two human beings first made eye contact. In the distant past, identity theft amounted to dressing in disguise. These days, criminals have become smarter and have begun to use technology to their advantage to secure the life savings of hard working citizens.

The Internet has changed the face of crime, and it’s now altered identity theft as well. The result is pretty much the same as before, for all of today’s technological advances: finances, credit cards, banking accounts and loans are open season. If you don’t take matters into your own hands, you could end up with a boat load of debt, and possibly even worse if you don’t catch it early enough.

    Losing Time

Even if you can catch identity theft in its earliest stages, you’re facing an uphill battle. You may be able to freeze your accounts and therefore block any actual money from being lost, but there is still some bad news for you to accept.

First of all, after freezing your account, you won’t be able to access your money for a number of days. Second, you’ll have to change all your vital numbers so that anyone trying to use your information will be refused. Though you’re technically only losing time, the frustration alone that is caused is still far from pleasant – and this is the smallest amount of trouble that identity theft can possible cause.

    Low Charges To Your Accounts

When protection against identity theft fails, most people experience this category of offense. Their bank accounts and credit cards are compromised, and a selection of seemingly random transactions appear on their statements. The bank will probably be able to determine which are authentic and which aren’t, but you’ll still have to go through the trouble of having to change your numbers. Even then, you’re probably going to be getting letters that your accounts are experiencing suspicious activity.

Millions of individuals lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in this way, year after passing year.

    Serious Financial And Lending Trouble

As frustrating as the previous stages may have been, they’re nothing compared to the next two. If criminals manage to pull up all your bank information and use these numbers before you know what’s happening, then your life could become miserable for years after the initial theft. Thieves sometimes will even take out loans in your name, which can cause any number of problems, including hassling collection calls when the loan’s payments aren’t made. This will eventually damage your credit score.

In spite of the fact that the new charges may not have been your fault, the bank will still count the loan from before.

    Illegal Activity

As bad as the others were, this is by far the worst. If criminals pretend to be you physically instead of simply hacking your accounts online. Thieves sometimes finance illegal immigrant operations, run drugs, and even add fake additions to your medical records that can affect your doctor’s ability to treat you. This is more than just simple theft, because this type of personal invasion affects you as a person and your status as a law abiding citizen.

If your protection against identity theft does not work, then make sure that you take care of the matter as fast as you can. By doing that, you’re protecting your finances and your good name, as well as your family and future.

Obtain protection against identity theft today by selecting one of the various providers out there on the web to prevent these types of crimes. Make credit card fraud protection a high priority from a reliable online source and ensure your savings and your loved ones are safe without concerning yourself with ID fraudsters.

A Word or Two About Slip-on Shoes

Posted by Laura Donovan on December 23rd, 2009 and filed under online education | No Comments »

It seems like the variety of slip-on sneakers available for purchase is widening by the year. With new patterns and styles offered by a growing number of companies, the selection of these shoes becomes larger and all the more appealing.

The charge was led by Vans, as the classic Vans slip on sneaker really popularized the style. Since then, many apparel makers have jumped onto the bandwagon and it seems like the trend is still picking up steam.

These days, the product line has expanded, and everyone wants a piece of the action. Even companies like Prada and Burberry are both producing their own form of the slip on sneaker.

The reasons for the appeal to slip-on sneakers should be obvious anyway. They’re very easy to put on and take off, and they’re extremely comfortable too. When you combine the comfort and convenience with the fact that they can look good, this adds up to a winning formula.

Many people like the versatility of slip ons. They can go with both shorts and jeans, and casual and sportswear both lend themselves well to the style.

I always like to buy my shoes online. Sure, you’ll have to make sure that any sneaker you buy is comfortable, but I find that any customer feedback I read in advance is usually reliable. I also find a much wider selection of sneakers.

Not only will you find so many different colors and styles being offered, but you’ll also find far more brands than you’d ever find in one store. Since so many styles are now in fashion, you’d owe it to yourself to check them out.

One of my favorite things about slip on sneakers are their very reasonable prices. This naturally depends on the brands, but I’ve seen some of these sneakers offered for $25 per pair and even less. All in all, the comfort and price offer many reasons to look for these.

This writer’s blog shares more information about boys slip on sneakers and other shoes.

    For The Student: Learn English

Posted by Adriana Noton on December 19th, 2009 and filed under online education | No Comments »

With no official language, speech in the United States can only be controlled by popularity. And because of this it is essential to be prepared to speak in all environments. The first and widely spoken language in the United States, English, is necessary for everyday life. Some organizations that require English are schools both private and public, professional work, and simply social amalgamation. English is a phonetic language, which means it can be spelled as it is heard. It is not difficult to learn because of all the influences and groups available to study.

If you desire an education, indiscriminate of age, English is surely necessary for an affective one. Public schools, especially, follow what is mandated by the state, all of which speak English. This remains true for all major colleges. Colleges are especially important because they hand out degrees, not expendable to high paying employers.

Those who are bilingual remain better situated to retain work that pays top dollar. If English is not your native language and you are able to successfully read and write in English, this will make you seem intelligent. Bilinguals certainly have a greater scope of opportunity than monolinguals. Working to translate, teach others English, and take part in multicultural activities are just a few. Bilinguals present themselves better to their superiors, coworkers, and those they serve.

Beginning to learn English is easy, basically natural. On the Internet, a growing device of communication, there are an overwhelming number of groups to aid in learning. Online programs are made to assist those struggling on the finer points of the English language, while heartening learners. Free or not, online help is not short.

If the Internet is not your strongpoint, there are plenty of places to learn and practice English in person. The most obvious being the classroom, classes are available to people of any age, even toddlers. Books can provide insight on the language not found anywhere else. But reading is not sufficient to completely grasp English. Fraternization at public areas is encouraged.

Practice really is the sculptor of perfection. Speak randomly about common topics like the weather or news. Doing this creates a fluid motion in speech reading cannot accomplish. Reading is not enough to effectively learn it. Venturing out into the real world to meet people and practice performing different verbal tasks is essential. Those that honestly try to do as much as they can in English often have the easiest time at it.

Because of its phonetic property, English may seem simple to become literate in. This is wrong because the indiscreet formalities may make it tedious to those who are not willing to apply themselves. Writing is more difficult than speech, due to proper grammar and notation being absolutely essential.

In virtually every civilized country around the world, English is becoming a standard, a language almost as important as the primary. A majority of citizens in many countries already speak and write in English. When in the United States a disability to comprehend even the basics of English makes one extremely disadvantaged. To properly move about in society and do simple things like order food, socialize, and most importantly, work all need to be done in English, which means learning it is indubitably worth your while.

Straying away from the traditional English class, tools such as the online English courses are highly useful for beginners. Our business English course is also a popular choice for people that wish to learn the language for business settings.
