The word for hello in Chinese was taught to a sixty year old man when he was on his way from England to work in China in 2008. Despite his extensive education the man from the West knew next to nothing about China when his plane touched down in Beijing.
His extensive formal education had taught him little about the most populous country on the planet. He had heard about the Red Guards and Mao’s Little Red Book but for thirty years before 2008 the country had been undergoing a huge process of change and this had passed him by.
The man’s hosts politely ignored his shocking ignorance. They taught him a few basic expressions like ‘Thank you’ and ‘Good Bye’. The man had some knowledge of oral languages, and quickly realized that Chinese and English have both served the purposes of literate users for centuries. This gives them some things in common despite the many differences.
The man fell in love with the bright expressions on the faces of the Chinese people. In England he had the idea that they were always rather sour and grumpy, but in China they seemed bursting with energy and purpose. A woman of fifty who threw up her hands in delight when she knocked over some skittles in a bowling alley seemed to epitomise the spontaneity of the people.
As they wandered through the Forbidden City and along the Great Wall the man’s guide tried to teach him a few Chinese words. His mouth did not seem to be designed to create the new sounds. His tongue and lips refused to co-operate. He noticed that his guide had difficulty with ‘v’ and ‘w’ sounds in English, and concluded that phonics was a challenge.
Although Beijing was about to host the Olympic Games taxi drivers seemed to have no more idea of English than he had of their language. Users of both languages tend to shout their own language louder when others fail to understand.
The man observed that English and Chinese are the two most spoken languages in the world. They satisfy the emotional, intellectual and social needs of their users. The motivation to learn a new language is therefore not a matter of necessity but of pure interest. It is surely great to be able to use the two most used languages on Earth and learning such a cultivated and musical tongue is also a great pleasure.
The need of speakers to learn each other’s language is reciprocal. On leaving China he continued his efforts to learn, buying a dictionary and bothering his friends with incoherent pronunciations. Progress was slow with this haphazard method. He seemed to lack direction and was tempted to give up.
