Mastering Microsoft Exel’s SUMIF Function

Almost every Exel user has encountered the SUM function. It is one of the most widely used functions of the Excel functions. And most Excel users will also have used the IF function. SUMIF function is a combination of the SUM and If functions which allows us to calculate the total of all cells within a given range that match a certain condition.
For example, let’s say that, we have a “Sales” worksheet containing a breakdown of the sales of each salesperson. We now want to create a summary of these figures in a “Branches” worksheet containing two columns: “Branch” and “Total Sales”. We can use the SUMIF function to generate the figures in the “Total Sales” column.
A good first step would be to create named cells so that we can refer to these names in our formula. To name a range of cells begin by selecting the range then click on the name box in the top left of the worksheet, enter a name then press the Enter key.
Having inserted the names of all the branches in the first column of our “Branches” worksheet, we would highlight the first cell in the “Total Sales” column, adjacent to the cell containing the name of our first branch; let’s say, for example, our first branch is “Birmingham”. When using functions for the first time, it’s useful to use Excel’s Insert Function facility. To access this, click on the Insert Function button on left of the formula bar. The SUMIF function is in the “Math and Trig” category. Scroll down the list, highlight SUMIF and then click OK. Excel now prompts us for the three arguments required by the SUMIF function.
The first argument is the range of cells to be evaluated. In our branch sales example, this would be the column containing the name of the branch. If we have named this column, we can insert the name by clicking on “Use In Formula” in the Formulas Tab at the Excel Ribbon. This is a drop-down menu containing every name in the workbook.
The second argument is the criteria we want to match. In our example, is simply the contents of the cell in the adjacent “Branch” column, which in this case contains “Birmingham”. We can click in the cell to pick up the reference.
The final argument is the SUM range and, in this case, it will be the column that contains the cells that we want to actually total; namely, the sales figures. Again, if we have named this column, we would click on “Use In Formula” and choose the name that we created earlier. Having specified the three arguments we click OK and Excel creates the formula.
It’s now safe for us to copy the formula down. As we copy the formula, the cell reference of the adjacent column containing the branch name will change but the two named ranges will remain the same. To copy the formula down, position the cursor on the AutoFill handle in the bottom right of the cell and then either drag or simply double-click.

Whenever new cells are inserted into a worksheet, existing data has to shift in order to make room to the newly inserted cells. When we are inserting entire rows or columns the direction in which data will be moved is predetermined. If we insert an entire column, existing data is shifted to the right. If we insert an entire row, any existing data is shifted down. However when we insert cells rather than entire rows or columns excel needs to ask us in which direction we want the existing data to be shifted: to the right or down.
To insert a row of cells, highlight the cells above which you would like the new cells inserted then choose Home – Cells – Insert – Insert Cells. Excel then displays a dialogue box asking you to specify what to do with the existing data and, naturally, you would choose “Down”. When you click OK, existing data moves down and a range of cells is inserted of the same size as the range that was highlighted.
The same rules apply when we delete cells. To delete an unwanted row of cells, select the appropriate cells and choose Home – Cells – Delete – Delete Cells. Alternatively, you can right-click on the highlighted cells and choose Delete from the context menu. Again, Excel displays a dialogue box asking you to specify the direction in which you want the existing data to move. This time, however, since we are moving data to fill the gap created by the Delete command, the directions available are “Up” and “Left”. To delete a row of cells, we would choose “Up” as the direction.
Whenever you are inserting cells, you will notice that the format of the newly inserted cells will always match that of the cells which are selected when the Insert command is used.
Inserted cells are usually blank. However, it is possible to copy or cut a range of cells and then, instead of pasting them, to insert them above or to the left of a given range. To do this, copy or cut the desired range of cells and then highlight the cells above or to the left of which you want the cells inserted. If you right-click, you will see that the context menu displays the command “Insert Copied Cells” (or “Insert Cut Cells” if you used the cut command) in place of the usual “Insert” command. Similarly, in the Insert drop-down menu in the Cells group of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon, “Insert Cells” will have also been replaced by “Insert Copied (or Cut) Cells”. If the copy command is used, when you have inserted cells, to exit copy mode and get rid of that flashing border around the copied cells, press the Escape key on your keyboard.

How long should you practice? That is a common question amongst beginner on their first acoustic guitar lesson.
Well the answer to that question depends on one of two things. Do you want to master the instrument or do you just want to learn to play it for fun? They say, (whoever they are) that the guitar is the easiest instrument to learn to play and the hardest to master.
If you want to “Master” the guitar then you should need roughly 10000 hours of practice and you can stop reading this article right now.
If you want to play for fun and you are about to start learning then I have some good advice on how to do it in just 48 hours. I can understand that many of you will not believe me but keep on reading to find out how I teach it. To learn to play guitar well enough to jam with your friends and have a good time singing any song you like you need a total of 48 hours of practice. The way to do it is to set aside for 4 months and practice 30 minute 6 days a week. You obviously need to practice solid exercises and not just goof around, I think that is quite easy to understand.
A good tutorial should be able to show you in 4 months all you need to know to became a proficient guitar and play some relatively easy guitar songs.
A little bit every day is way better that a lot every now and then. That’s how humans learn just about anything really, by repeating the same exercises over and over, and in the long run developing muscle memory. Eventually all the chords & rhythms will became second nature.

Are you still using the ‘but’ word when it comes to getting in shape? This may sound harsh, but somebody has to tell youIf you are still using the ‘but’ word when it comes to your health, then you are sabotaging your chances of feeling fantastic, having abundant energy and having a body to be proud of.

BUT… You don’t know how busy I am. Well, guess what, most of us are really busy, often by choice. We have chosen to take the path we have taken, but its up to ourselves to manage that so that we can have abundant health, vitality and fitness.
BUT Its too hard to lose weight and exercise when the kids are at home on school holidays. Its important that you are a healthy role model for your children. School holidays are quite long these days so you shouldn’t be giving your children food treats all through the holidays (and joining in). After all, you don’t want them to grow up and have weight problems, do you? Do activities together and be a great role model for them.
BUT… I have so many social events to go to! And you probably always will, but you can’t use this as a reason not to look after yourself. Surely, you want to feel great and look great at these functions? Get into good exercise habits now so that there is less chance of weight gain during this time.
BUT…I’m away on a vacation soon, no point starting an exercise and weight management program now! Oh, yes there is! Now is the exact time you should be looking after yourself, because you want to be in the best shape ever to enjoy your well earned holiday. Develop good habits before you go away and there will be less chance of going crazy and overindulging in high fat foods and loads of alcohol on your vacation. If your vacation is on the beach somewhere, use that as incentive to lose weight and get in great shape, after all you’ll be spending a lot of time on the beach in your swimsuit!
So why not make the decision to let go of all the ‘buts’ and recognise that they are just excuses. Take control of your health and fitness, it really is up to you. If you are overweight and unfit it really is a result of all the choices you have made, nobody elses. But the good news is that there are so many resources out there to help you, you just have to drop the excuses and take the first step!
